(My Husband, Candy, Myself and Rich)
For our script, we drew upon inspiration from a book that uses parallel storytelling: “All The Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. This book tells the stories of a blind girl in France and a boy in Hitler Youth in World War II. By telling their respective stories side by side, it creates a more dramatic story overall-- something we hoped to do in our script. We also were inspired by “My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts,” which told the story of the narrator’s grandmother in a concise and respectable way. Because of these two stories, wanted to incorporate the storytelling methods of the novel and the respectful nature of the short film.
Kennedy
Our two historical sources were in fact Candy and Rich themselves-- they are my grandparents. I remember when I was out visiting them, they told me the story of the friends going to the lake--Tommy did not want to swim, for he was scared of drowning. He offered to hold my uncle Erich, who was a baby at the time, while everyone else went swimming. This story struck me because yes, they were parents, but they were also still kids. They were still passionate and full of life, even though they had chosen a more serious path--getting married. They continued to tell me their story of taking on more responsibility as young parents. I was inspired by how determined and strong they were through this whole experience. They took the responsibility and went forward in the path that they felt was the best for them and their future, even though it was very difficult.

The story of Candy and Rich inspired me when Kennedy pitched it in class-- I immediately felt drawn to the idea that two young kids had to grow up so fast and take on so much responsibility. Through Kennedy’s retelling of their journey, I felt we needed to tell their story in a compelling and inspiring way. By telling the story of Candy and Rich’s first baby parallel with the short story of them going to the lake and cliff jumping, we felt we could pull out meaning from their story more clearly for the audience. As the group of friends planned their trip to the lake, Rich and Candy would plan their future with a baby; as they jumped off the cliff, they “jumped” into life as parents; etc. We hope that we did their story justice through our screenplay adaptations.
