There is something satisfying about the sound of an object being cut. That sound can signal a great change, something being altered from its natural state to something completely different. It is the sound of destiny and the future being made. It is the sound of crafts, and creation. That one sound is what lead our group to choose our particular process for the audio process piece. Our object that is being changed forever is fabric, as it is being prepared for sewing. The fabric is going from a state of almost no use, except to be pretty, to something more useful, and something that will fulfill its purpose in being a new creation. It could be a pair of pants, a shirt, a blanket, whatever the creator desires it to be. That is what stuck with us when we heard that sound of the sewing machine, of the scissors cutting; the fact that there were so many potentials in this one hobby. It seems uncommon nowadays to run into someone who has a passion for sewing but it is one that is so useful. There is so much more freedom when you have a talent for sewing. Need a skirt fix? Sew it. Have a hole in a pair of jeans? Sew that sucker up. It is one of those lost arts that seems to have a nostalgic feeling to it. When we brought in our different sounds and recordings, immediately when we all listened to the one of the sewing machine, and fabric being cut, we knew that was the one that we wanted to use. There was a very satisfying sound of the cutting, and one we could all recognize.

I feel that many people at one point or another have been exposed to the sound of a sewing machine. Many have an aunt, a grandmother, mom, or someone in their lives who has that gift for sewing. In my case, my mom is incredibly talented when it comes to sewing. At so many different points in my childhood, my mom could be seen behind the sewing machine, crafting something wonderful for us kids. It was something that helped me live my standards as many times she would lengthen or alter some article of clothing so that I could wear it out and about. It was something that brought personality to my life as I could wear unique things of her creation. It was something that brought love and warmth into my life as she made my wedding dress, the perfect gift and amazing act of love that she could have given me. The art of sewing, and the sounds associated with it, are personal and a part of human history. It is how we create protection, comfort and beauty in our lives.

Sewing has been part of my life since I was a child. My mom made all my halloween costumes. She made my baptism dress. She made my prom dress. I took lessons when I visited my Grandparents. I still have my own sewing machine. Even now, I can ask my mom to make something for me or make something myself. When we talked about processes to record I thought about what would sound interesting. Sewing is something that is so familiar to me but absolutely alien to others. The sound of fabric scissors is an intensely satisfying sound and I never realized it until now! Listening to the machine work, something that I’ve heard hundreds of times, took on more depth as I recognized the bits and pieces within. Something commonplace seen through a different lens is magical beyond belief.

Sewing is not a practice that I took part in growing up, yet the satisfying sounds derived from the process invoke a sense of nostalgia. Much of my childhood was spent outdoors, running around enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Like many kids my age, I occasionally found myself needing to have my pants repaired after a mishap. My mother always had a sewing kit ready for such emergencies. The sound of fabric sling through machine reminds me of my mother dedication to raising my sister and I. She has always been there to help fix whatever may be wrong in our lives, just as a sewing machine will fix tears. Corn as it may seem, the process of a sewing machine does resonate with me on a nostalgic level.
